Matthew Williamson uses colour in a way very few designers dare match. He routinely splashes ultra pinks, fluorescent yellows and acid greens with an energising flourish onto women's day and evening wear. This has become his signature style since the debut of his first collection, 'Electric Angels', in 1997 - a combination of kaleidoscopic bias-cut dresses and separates, sometimes embroidered and fused with a bohemian edge.
Modelled by friends Jade Jagger, Kate Moss and Helena Christensen, it was a presentation that affirmed the London-based designer's influences: fame, glamour and India (Williamson's garments often read like a travel diary, tracing his love of exotic destinations).
Celebrity was the all-important catalyst which made the fashion world sit up and pay attention to his work, but since that first collection, it's been the intricate detail, contemporary styling and sexy silhouettes that have kept the applause coming.
Born in Chorlton, Manchester, in 1971, Matthew Williamson graduated from Central Saint Martins in 1994 and set up his own label in 1996 after spending two years as consultant at UK mass market chain Monsoon. 2002 saw the launch of a homewear range and a move to show his womenswear collections at New York Fashion Week. A first foray into perfume and home fragrance - a collaboration with perfumer and friend Lyn Harris - saw the creation of a limited edition perfume 'Incense'.
Now selling to over 80 stores worldwide, the first Matthew Williamson flagship store opened in 2004 on London's Bruton Street, and there are plans for a New York store.
